You have probably seen or heard of software patches or updates. Pretty much every company in some way releases patches. In simple terms, Wikipedia does a great job defining it: a “set of changes to a computer program or its supporting data designed to update, fix, or improve it.”

But how does this affect the here and now? If you use a computer, you need to check and make sure that all operating system patches are installed. Windows and Apple both regularly release patches for their systems.

Patches do three things for you:

  1. Close security holes – They prevent the “bad guys” from accessing your computers.
  2. Fix stability issues – when a program or property has a glitch, a patch can fix it.
  3. Increases performance and functionality – New features to help make your job easier.

From a cybersecurity standpoint, you should bring your “A” game when it comes to patch management. You should make sure that every system on your network is kept patched and updated. This can feel like a tall order, but it’s so important and isn’t as challenging as some might think.

Now you might say, “Windows updates run automatically; I don’t need to worry about it.” But what if the automatic Windows update on your computer is broken? Would you know? How many patches behind might you be?
